Hello, we have a XCart store over at www.westcoastpetsupply.com and are thinking about setting up a forum for our customers to use to share stories, pictures, ask questions, etc. What sort of php software is recommended? I see that vBulletin is used here and it's nice, but what are everyone's thoughts?

I vote for vBulletin.
From SEO stand point of view get vBulleting license with Branding Free Option. That will remove the link from your website to vBulleting which will prevent PR leak.
Additionally get vbSEO module at http://www.vbseo.com/ (also Branding Free) - this will get ensure that URL structure of the forum is search engine friendly.
