A better title for The Art of SEO, an article by Jill Walhen, may have been When Less is More. E-Commerce stores often rely heavily on success in search engines to support their business, so it's easy as an x-cart user to become obsessed with finding the perfect "formula" for x-cart search engine success. This formula tends to include such things as putting a keyword phrase in the domain name, file name, title tag, meta description, hyperlinks that point to a page, the H1 title on the page and so forth.
The Art of SEO explains that while this is necessary to an extent, if you take too ridgid an SEO approach you may very well trigger the spam filter of the search engine spiders. The article further elaborates that you can receive a more positive listing response from the search engines and your customers, by highlighting the uniqueness of your site while using a variety of different customer driven keyword terms in different areas of your ecommerce store. In summary, don't look for a magic formula, let your product/service speak to your customers and the search engine rankings will follow.
